Dear Governor Hobbs and members of the Arizona Legislature,

My name is [your name], and I am a resident of [your city], Arizona. I am writing to urge you to support Medicaid coverage of evidence-based obesity treatment in Arizona's FY 2027 budget.

More than 30% of Arizona adults — about 1.5 million people — live with obesity, the condition that drives our state's most expensive diseases. AHCCCS already spends roughly $2.45 billion every year treating cardiometabolic disease, much of it obesity-driven. Each member who progresses from obesity to diabetes nearly triples in annual cost of care, from about $8,800 to $24,500.

The cost of acting is far smaller than most people assume. The first year of expanded coverage is projected at about $7.7 million — roughly offset by the estimated $8 million in annual savings that newly negotiated federal drug pricing delivers on the GLP-1 medications AHCCCS already covers for diabetes. Treating obesity is prevention: it improves health immediately for people living with complications and, like vaccination or cancer screening, heads off the far costlier complications still to come.

[Your personal reason will appear here as you type.]

I respectfully ask you to include obesity-medication coverage — paired with prior authorization and sensible fiscal guardrails — in the FY 2027 budget. Please don't let Arizona pay more for inaction than it would for prevention.

Sincerely,

[your name]
[your city], Arizona
